The Tang census collapses

The first census after the war registers about 17 million people where 53 million stood ten years before. Most of the missing 36 million are displaced, untaxed or unrecorded rather than dead — but the true toll runs into the many millions, and the number stands as a monument to the deadliest war the world would see until the twentieth century.
