Answering Granada's seizure of the border town of Zahara, a Castilian force scales the walls of Alhama by night — a fortress a day's ride from Granada itself, which every relief attempt fails to retake. 'Woe is me, Alhama,' runs the ballad the loss produced; the ten years' war for the last Muslim state in Iberia has begun.
