The Granada capitulations betrayed

1499 · Event

The surrender terms had promised Granada's Muslims their faith, their law and their mosques. Seven years on, Cardinal Cisneros arrives with mass baptisms and Arabic book-burnings; the Albaicín rises, the revolt is crushed, and by 1502 the choice across Castile is conversion or exile. Within a century even the converts' descendants, the Moriscos, will be expelled.
