The mines reach the Burg bastion
1683 · Event
Rejecting a costly assault, the Ottomans dig — a war of tunnels and counter-tunnels under the fortifications, with defenders listening for picks through the walls of cellars. By early September the mines have breached the Burg ravelin and bastion, plague and dysentery are inside the city, and Vienna is days from falling when watchfires flare on the Kahlenberg heights.
