Retreating through the Balkans, the Grand Vizier executes his own commanders for the defeat — until the sultan's own sentence overtakes him at Belgrade: the traditional silk bowstring, applied by the imperial executioners on Christmas Day. His severed head travels to Istanbul; the empire he gambled never advances in Europe again.
