The croissant and the coffee house

Legend credits the siege with two gifts to European breakfast: crescent-shaped pastries baked in mockery of the Ottoman flag, and Vienna's first coffee house, opened with sacks of beans abandoned in the Turkish camp. Both stories are probably too good to be true — and both are told wherever coffee and croissants are served, which is to say everywhere.
