Three months before elections he was set to lose, Fulgencio Batista walks into Camp Columbia and takes Cuba without a shot — cancelling the vote, suspending the constitution, and closing every legal road for the political generation that includes a 25-year-old lawyer-candidate named Fidel Castro. What cannot be voted out, that generation concludes, must be forced out.
