Castro declares the revolution socialist

At the funeral for the victims of the pre-invasion air strikes — with the Bay of Pigs landing hours away — Castro says publicly for the first time what Washington has long suspected: this is a socialist revolution. The declaration completes the migration from the Sierra Maestra to the Soviet bloc; eighteen months later the missiles arrive.
