The New York Times finds Castro alive

With Batista's press insisting Castro died at the landing, veteran correspondent Herbert Matthews is smuggled into the Sierra Maestra and finds him very much alive — commanding, by careful stage-management of the same few dozen men marching past repeatedly, what looks like a substantial army. The front-page interviews make Castro an international figure; the propaganda war is won in Manhattan.
