With the jails filling, the new governor commissions a special court that makes the disaster systematic: it admits spectral evidence — the accusers' visions of the defendants' spirits — which no defence can possibly rebut. Of the first case it tries, Bridget Bishop, to the last, its record is uniform: every defendant who maintains innocence is convicted.
