Mehmed builds Rumeli Hisarı

In under five months the young sultan throws a great fortress across the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, opposite his grandfather's castle — 'the throat-cutter'. Its guns close the strait to Christian shipping and cut Constantinople off from the Black Sea grain that feeds it. The siege has begun before a shot is fired at the walls.
