Mehmed builds Rumeli Hisarı

In under five months the young sultan builds a great fortress at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, opposite Anadolu Hisarı, built by his great-grandfather Bayezid I. Its guns close the strait and cut Constantinople off from Black Sea grain — preparations for the siege are under way before a shot is fired at the walls.
