Mehmed makes Constantinople his capital

Rather than sack and abandon the city, Mehmed — now 'the Conqueror' — moves his capital there, repopulates it, and styles himself Kayser-i Rûm, Caesar of Rome. Byzantine scholars fleeing west carry Greek learning into the Renaissance; the sultan sees himself as heir to the empire he destroyed.
