On the eve of the assault, Orthodox and Catholic worship together in Hagia Sophia one final time, their long schism forgotten, and Constantine XI rides the walls asking his 8,000 defenders to die well. Across the ditch, 80,000 Ottomans rest for the morning; both sides know it is the last night.
