Third voyage of Columbus
1498–1500 · Event
Steering further south, Columbus sights Trinidad and then the mouths of the Orinoco — fresh water on such a scale that he concludes, correctly for once, that this must be a continent. He calls it an 'other world' in his letters, and still files it as the approaches to Asia.
