Death of Columbus

1506 · Event

Columbus dies at Valladolid at about 54, comfortably off but embittered over his lost titles — and still insisting, against the mounting evidence and his own third-voyage letters, that what he found was the edge of Asia. The continents he stumbled into are named the following year, for a man who realised what they were: Amerigo Vespucci.
