Amundsen turns south in secret

Roald Amundsen, publicly bound for the Arctic, tells his crew at Madeira that the Fram is actually going to Antarctica — and cables Scott, already en route: 'Beg leave to inform you Fram proceeding Antarctic.' The North Pole has been claimed; Amundsen wants the South, and he has kept the plan even from his backers.
