Shackleton and five men sail a 22-foot open boat 800 miles across the worst ocean on earth to South Georgia, navigating by four sun sights in sixteen days — then cross the island's unmapped mountains on foot to reach the whaling station. Every man of the Endurance is rescued alive; the boat journey is still studied as the finest feat of small-boat seamanship ever made.
