Alba sets up the Council of Blood

Sent north with an army to punish the iconoclasm, the Duke of Alba sets up the Council of Troubles (September 1567); it condemns over a thousand people, and in June 1568 the counts Egmont and Horn, Catholic loyalists both, are executed in Brussels' great square.
