The relief of Leiden

1574 · Event

To save a starving city, the rebels cut the dykes and drown their own farmland, and the Sea Beggars' flat-bottomed barges sail across the fields into Leiden with herring and white bread. The university founded in gratitude the next year becomes the republic's great school; the 3rd of October is still Leiden's feast day.
