Spain's unpaid army mutinies and sacks the richest city in northern Europe, killing thousands of its citizens in three days. The atrocity accomplishes what Orange's diplomacy could not: within days all seventeen provinces, Catholic and Protestant alike, sign the Pacification of Ghent to drive the Spanish soldiery out.
