Having talked her way to an escort and crossed 350 miles of enemy territory in eleven days, the seventeen-year-old picks the disguised Dauphin out of his crowded court — and after private words never revealed, and a theologians' examination at Poitiers, is given armour, a banner and an army. Desperation is part of it: Orléans is starving, and nothing else has worked.
