Mustafa Kemal lands at Samsun

1919 · Event

Sent by the occupied Ottoman government to demobilise the Anatolian armies, the hero of Gallipoli steps ashore at Samsun and does the opposite: he begins organising the national resistance, resigning his commission when recalled. Turkey dates its national rebirth from this landing; Atatürk later gave the date as his own birthday.
