With Istanbul under Allied occupation and parliament dissolved, the nationalists convene their own assembly in a dusty railway town on the Anatolian plateau — a rival government with Kemal as its president. Ankara, chosen for being unconquerable rather than beautiful, is the future capital in embryo; the day is now Turkey's children's holiday.
