The Battle of Sakarya
1921 · Event
Along the Sakarya river, sixty miles from Ankara itself, Kemal — granted dictatorial powers and issuing the order that 'there is no line of defence, there is a plain of defence' — halts the Greek advance in a 21-day battle. It is the war's turning point: the assembly names him Ghazi, and the initiative never leaves Turkish hands again.
