The Hat Law

1925 · Event

Parliament makes the brimmed Western hat compulsory for men and effectively outlaws the fez — because the fez, worn brimless so the forehead can touch the ground in prayer, is the old order made visible. Dress becomes ideology by statute; there are protests, and executions. No reform better captures the revolution's method: the new Turkey will be worn, spoken and written into being.
