Jurassic Period

201-145 million years ago · Event

Pangaea splits, the climate turns warm and wet, and dinosaurs inherit an emptied world: this is the age of giants, when the long-necked sauropods — Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus — become the largest land animals ever, hunted by Allosaurus, while Stegosaurus grazes below and the first birds flutter out of the feathered dinosaurs above. Named for the Jura mountains, it is the period whose name became shorthand for the whole dinosaur age.
