The transports reach Auschwitz-Birkenau

The first mass transports arrive at the vast new camp built beside Auschwitz, where gas chambers and crematoria are engineered for murder on an industrial scale. Trains will come from every corner of occupied Europe for two and a half years; about 1.1 million people die here — the largest single site of the Holocaust.
