With the war visibly lost, the machinery runs faster than ever: in eight weeks, 437,000 Hungarian Jews are deported, most to Birkenau, where the crematoria cannot keep pace. It stops only when Regent Horthy halts the trains under international pressure — proof, bitter in hindsight, that pressure could work.
