Lemkin coins the word 'genocide'

Raphael Lemkin — a Polish-Jewish lawyer who lost 49 relatives to the catastrophe he was naming — publishes the word he built from Greek and Latin for the crime that had no name. Four years later the UN adopts the Genocide Convention he drafted almost alone; the word, and the law, are his monument.
