The Chios massacre

Ottoman forces answer a raid on the prosperous island of Chios by killing or enslaving most of its hundred thousand inhabitants. Delacroix's vast canvas of the scene hangs in the Salon within two years — atrocity as European public event, turning drawing-room philhellenism into subscriptions, volunteers and, eventually, fleets.
