Greece's first head of state — a former Russian foreign minister trying to build a government out of warlords and clans — is shot and stabbed on the church steps of Nafplio by the brother and son of a chieftain he had imprisoned. The anarchy that follows convinces the powers to impose a monarchy; the new nation begins with a martyr and a lesson.
