The fall of Missolonghi

After a year's siege by Ottoman and Egyptian armies, Missolonghi's starving defenders stake everything on a mass night breakout — betrayed, and ending in slaughter, with the last defenders blowing themselves up in the powder magazines rather than surrender. Militarily a disaster; in the salons of Paris and London, the war's Alamo.
