DEFCON 3: the superpowers lean in

When Brezhnev proposes joint intervention to save the encircled Third Army — and hints at acting alone — Washington answers overnight by raising its nuclear forces to DEFCON 3, the highest alert since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Both sides step back within a day, the Third Army is resupplied under UN flag, and the war ends with the superpowers looking into the same abyss as 1962.
