Sadat flies to Jerusalem
1977 · Event
Four years after attacking on Yom Kippur, Sadat does what no Arab leader has contemplated: he lands at Ben Gurion airport, shakes hands with the generals he fought, and addresses the Knesset in Arabic on peace. The gamble isolates Egypt in the Arab world and will cost Sadat his life — and it leads, through Camp David, to a peace that has held ever since.
