The meek inherit the earth: after the Great Dying, this pig-sized, tusked, burrowing plant-eater — a therapsid cousin of the mammal line — accounts for as much as nine in ten of all land vertebrates, the closest any four-legged animal has come to having the planet to itself. Its fossils on Africa, India and Antarctica alike later helped prove continental drift.
