The voyage of the St. Louis
1939 · Event
A liner carrying 937 Jewish refugees from Hamburg is turned away by Cuba, then by the United States — sailing close enough to see the lights of Miami — and returns to Europe. Britain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands divide the passengers; 254 of them are later murdered in the countries that took them in.
