Three Greek merchants in Odessa found a secret society sworn to throw off Ottoman rule — complete with initiation rites, ciphers, and the carefully spread rumour that Russia stands behind them (it doesn't). Within six years its network runs through every Greek community from the Danube to Egypt, waiting for the word.
